The 45 mile route begins at Windmill Hill before heading south to spend the first day walking amongst the stone circles of Avebury. Avebury is a magical place, Michael and Mary, a pair of ley lines that run from Land's end to Bury St Edmunds, kiss near the stones in the southern part of the circle. The enormous sarsen at the north end of the village, called the Swindon Stone, crosses the road at midnight. Avebury is older and bigger than Stonehenge, and you can walk amongst the stones (and the sheep poo), but it's 'just' a stone circle (ignoring everything else Avebury has to offer) whereas Stonehenge is architecturally unique; during general admission although you can't walk amongst the stones, you at least get an audio guide to explain it all.

Avebury and Stonehenge are two fascinating pre-historic sites that can be easily visited in a day. The better known one is Stonehenge – the mystic stone circle in the middle of England. It attracts all sorts of people, including some of the more extraordinary kind. A bucket list item that many people want to visit at least once in their lifetime. Stonehenge sits on Salisbury Plain, a flat area of chalk, covering some square miles. The whole plain is an area rich in archaeology, Stonehenge being one of many ancient monuments or earthworks. The area that Stonehenge sits in has been classed the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and covers many square miles.
